John Stoddard

• John died on December 4, 1703 in Wethersfield, Connecticut, at age 57. His will of 30 Nov 1703 mentions the six children here listed, along with his wife, Elizabeth. They also had two other children not mentioned in the will, who probably died young.³

Sergeant John Stoddard¹

• Sergeant John Stoddard was born about 1620 in England.²
• John married Mary Foote, daughter of Nathaniel Foote and Elizabeth Deming, about 1642, as her first husband.³
• He was an early settler of Wethersfield, Conn., and recorded his lands there, June 18, 1645. His homestead at Wethersfield was on the south corner of High and Fort streets. He had been in Wethersfield some years prior to this, for the Colonial Records show that he was a Juror as early as 2 Mar 1642/3, and in April of the same year he was plaintiff in a suit against John Plum for trespass. Hinman gives him the title of Sergeant, and places him in Wethersfield in 1639. John Stoddard, in 1660, was the proprietor of the Chester Grist Mill in Wethersfield, perhaps having owned it since the death of Leonard Chester in 1648. At a town meeting, held 25 Oct 1660, the town bought this mill, and agreed to pay its owner 'the full and just sum of 27 pouunds. In December of the following year 'John Stoodurd,' as he signs himself, states that 'the towne hath Released ..... his mill againe into his owne hands' with his consent. We learn also that 'the towne' at this same meeting 'granted for them selfes that if John Staddard Doe goe on to Repaire his mill then the fore said inhabetence will giue unto John Staddard Eury man one Days worke and also haue chouse at the same meeting Thomas Hurlbut and Hugh Wells to goe from home to home to p'r'suad the Rest of the inhabbitance to doe the like.' (Wethersfield Town Votes, I: 72.)²
• John died in December, 1664. The inventory of his estate amounted to £407 8s, which was distributed to his widow and six children, the oldest twenty-one and the youngest four years of age. Mary and Mercy each received £36 at the distribution of their father's estate, March 2, 1664/5.¹
